IR35 has few supporters outside of HMRC and the reaches of the government. Since its inception back in 1998 it has been contraversial; and for the PCG and other representation of the greater professional contractor supporters it has been a constant bone of contention.
Today, on advice from the PCG, I wrote to my local MP asking her to consider her position on the new early day motion (No 1164). I am not expecting a response, or even her support, but it made me think - why has it taken this long for me to feel passionately enough about a topic for me to write to an MP? I don't think I am alone - it seems that more people vote for TV programs that they do for the election. It feels like more people like to complain in the pub, than take to the streets and take direct action. What has happened? Has apothy and maintaining the status-quo become the number one priority? Or are people more content nowadays? Maybe this current recession, if it brings one benefit, will remind us all that we have a right to not agree with the decision makers. Maybe this recession will be the catalist for the next revolution and evolution of democracy. Or maybe another cool beer with friends will helpto put the world to right!
